Carbon Steel Fasteners Useful Info
ASTM A307 Carbon Steel Fasteners
The ASTM A307 specification covers carbon steel bolts and studs ranging from 1/4″ through 4″ diameter. This is your everyday, run of the mill bolt specification often manufactured using A36 round bar. There are three grades A, B, and C* which denote tensile strength, configuration, and application. Refer to the Mechanical Properties Chart for the subtle strength differences within each grade.
Manufactures,Stocks & Supplies Bolts,Studs,Threaded Bars/Rods as Specified under Specification ASTM A307 Grade A, Grade B & Grade C.
A | Headed bolts, threaded rods and bent bolts intended for general applications. |
---|---|
B | Heavy hex bolts and studs intended for flanged joints in piping systems with cast iron flanges. |
C* | Nonheaded anchor bolts, either bent or straight, intended for structural anchorage purposes. The end of a grade C anchor bolt intended to project from the concrete will be painted green for identification purposes. Permanent marking is a supplemental requirement. *As of August 2007, grade C has been replaced by specification F1554 grade 36. We will continue to supply grade C, if required by the project. |

ASTM A563 Carbon Steel Fasteners
A563 Carbon Steel Fasteners Grade Identification Markings
The ASTM A563 Carbon Steel Fasteners specification covers the chemical and mechanical requirements for carbon and alloy steel nuts used on bolts, studs, and externally threaded fasteners. The charts below address over tapping allowances for hot-dip galvanized nuts, grade marking requirements, and mechanical requirements. For information on suitable nuts for various grades of bolts
According the A563 specification, “The requirements for any grade of nut may, at the supplier’s option, and with notice to the purchaser, be fulfilled by furnishing nuts of one of the stronger grades specified herein unless such a substitution is barred in the inquiry and purchase order”. This is important because some nut grades are not readily available in certain sizes and finishes. Additionally, the specification allows for the substitution of ASTM A194 grade 2H nuts in lieu of A563 grade DH nuts due to the lack of availability of grade DH nuts in nominal sizes 3/4″ and larger

Four Properties of Carbon Steel Fasteners
Carbon steel fasteners use Carbon steel as raw materials. Carbon steel fasteners has four properties.
1. High temperature resistance. For high hardness, the fasteners has strong oxidation resistance. It cannot work under high temperature and cannot be interfered by high temperature. If the fasteners is passivated after being made out, the temperature resistance will be better.
2. Physical properties. Carbon steel fasteners has higher specific resistance. The specific resistance of Carbon steel is higher than that of carbon steel by five times. Standard parts have an expansion factor. Through experiment, if the temperature is higher, the expansion factor of Carbon steel fasteners will be improved definitely.
3. Stress capacity. Carbon steel fasteners can endure moderate stress. Although it cannot be compared favorably with high strength bolt, the fasteners can still meet the common requirements.
4. Mechanical properties. High rust resistance and corrosion resistance have close relationship with the features of Carbon steel. For standard parts developing constantly, mechanical properties of Carbon steel fasteners will be enhanced further.

Carbon steel fasteners is the most common type of steel used in fasteners production. Grades 2, 5, and 8 are typically the standard for carbon steel screws and bolts, with alloyed carbon steel being a higher-end variation on these metals. Their mechanical strength ranges from approximately 50 ksi (kilo-pound per square inch) up to 300 ksi in a finished product. Material properties for these grades include:
• Grade 2: This is a low carbon category that features the least expensive, but also least durable, types of steel. Grade 2 material is highly workable, and forms the bulk of steel grade fasteners.
• Grade 5: Grade 5 steels are produced from unalloyed medium carbon groups, such as type 1038, and are usually work-hardened to improve their strength. This is the most common grade used in automotive applications.
• Grade 8: These steels are typically medium carbon alloys, such as types 4037 and 4340. They are work-hardened to a high degree, making them stronger and better-suited for mechanically straining applications, like vehicle suspension systems.
1) Bolt Spacing
In making a riveted, bolted or welding joint, fasteners spacing should be such that the joint is tight and moisture cannot enter between the plys of material. If moisture enters the joint, corrosion may cause prying of the joint (also called “packout”) or fasteners failure. Honesty Metal provides guidelines with respect to fasteners patterns and spacing to prevent this problem.
